Abe's Garden/Park Manor Apartments

The seeds of Abe's Garden Community were planted when founder Michael Shmerling's father, Abram C. "Abe" Shmerling, M.D., was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Dealing with the disease firsthand, Michael witnessed the limited availability of quality services and care dedicated to a rapidly growing population of elderly adults with Alzheimer's and other dementias. Michael's passion for establishing an Alzheimer's center of excellence grew daily as the family watched 'virtually helpless' as their father suffered for more than 11 years, finally succumbing to the disease in November of 2006. Throughout Abe's battle with Alzheimer's, the idea for Abe's Garden Memory Support Center of Excellence began to take root. The dramatic need for a community whose heart and soul would be centered on caring for those sharing the same fate as Abe became clearer with each passing day. Mindful that there are no proven treatments or cures for Alzheimer's disease, the only viable recourse today is to improve the quality of life for those with the disease, their families, and professional caregivers through a residential community, day program, and community-based services designed specifically for that purpose. There is tremendous growth in the numbers of those living with Alzheimer's disease. This, coupled with the future statistics predicated on longer life expectancies, create an imminent need. Abe's Garden Community is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization, which is the only way Abe would have desired the organization to operate.
