Why not use that time and those apps to increase our brainpower? Consider one of these apps to boost your brain function. You could have a little fun, too.
General Mental Strengthening
This is the app most people think of when they consider a brain game. The app allows users to set goals based upon what areas they want to focus on most – memory, problem solving, or flexibility of thinking, for instance – and then the app tailors sessions to those goals. Games are timed and are new each time, so you can’t simply learn the right answers. You can track your progress and see your improvement over time.
The app itself is free, and unsubscribed members have access to a small amount of games. A paid version allows greater services. There is a version for $14.95 per month, paid on a per month basis. If you agree to pay for a full year, the price reduces to $6.95 per year. With a two-year commitment, the price is $4.99. There is also a lifetime membership available for $299.95.
Named the Apple store’s App of the Year in 2014, this app offers a range of brain training options. You can choose to focus on syntax, memory or comprehension, to get started. The app has both free and paid versions, allowing you to try the app before deciding if you want to delve more deeply into the paid version.
As you train, the app begins to respond to you and craft new challenges based upon your past responses. If you decide you love it after trying the free version, you can pay $5 per month or $45 per year for the premium membership.
The difference between these two fairly similar apps is that Luminosity focuses more on things such as memory while Elevate focuses more heavily on communication skills.
Relaxation and Stress Reduction
This app provides you with more than 40 self-guided meditation offerings, divided by mood and activity. If you’re feeling stressed, there’s a meditation for that. If you’re going to bed and want to free your mind for a better rest, there’s a lesson for that.
You don’t have to be practiced at meditation for these lessons to be helpful. These are easy for beginners to take up and find benefit from without much effort.
The app is $4.99, available for iOS or Android.
Focusing on the ‘science of happiness,’ this app helps you to focus on the positive. Activities within the app address various strengths such as giving and empathy. Consider Happify the app for the emotional side of your brain.
This app is what is considered a ‘freemuim’ subscription service. The app itself is free and provides a basic set of services. There are additional in-app purchases that may be made to provide additional services.
Fun and Games
Did you grow up with family members who did the NYT crossword puzzle every Sunday? Have you quit taking a daily newspaper but wish you could still do the crossword? This is the app for you.
Subscriptions are $6.95 per month of $39.95 per year.
If math puzzles are more your style, this clever game is available is app form just for you. These games emphasize logic and pattern seeking. There are several apps available in both iOS and Android formats.
