South Carolina, the Palmetto State, may be only the 40th biggest state in the county, but it has the nation’s 15th largest economy.

With the state's mild weather and many golf courses, tourism is a driving factor of South Carolina's economy. The average annual high temperature in Columbia is 63.8 degrees Fahrenheit. The average annual low temperature is 52.3 degrees Fahrenheit. While rain falls about 100 days per year, the state receives little snowfall. If you love being outdoors, South Carolina makes for a great home base.

If you enjoy hitting the links, you're in the right place. Just in the resort community of Myrtle Beach alone, you'll find over 100 golf courses. Imagine getting in 18 holes while having spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean, and you'll understand why this area is a golfer's paradise.

South Carolina has a long history of being associated with golf. In 1743, while still a British colony and years before becoming the eighth state, South Carolina received a shipment of golf balls and clubs from Scotland. The South Carolina Golf Club was formed in 1786, and the nation's first golf course was established at Harleston Green.

If you enjoy being active in your senior years but you're not into golf, don't worry. You can find state parks all over South Carolina. The Blue Ridge Mountains stretch across the state's northwest region. With the state's varied terrain, you can explore mountain ranges, inland forests, and beaches. While you're out exploring, you may just encounter the state bird, the Carolina wren. The state flower is the yellow jessamine. You can't miss its gold petals and sweet fragrance.

Book lovers will know that Pat Conroy was a native of South Carolina and wrote eloquently of the romance and foibles inherent in his home state. His novel "The Prince of Tides" was made into a movie starring Barbra Streisand. Conroy was a graduate of The Citadel in Charleston, and he used his time in the military as the basis for many of his other books like "The Great Santini" and "The Lords of Discipline."

Politics in South Carolina

South Carolina was one of the original Thirteen Colonies, having achieved statehood in 1788. The state relied heavily on slaves for its economy for decades. Its refusal to give up on the institution of slavery, along with Abraham Lincoln being elected president in 1860, was a primary factor in it being the first state to secede from the Union, thus precipitating the Civil War.

After the Civil War, the state leaned heavily Democratic up through the civil rights movement of the mid-20th century. As with most Southern states today, South Carolina is primarily a Republican stronghold. Starting with the 1964 presidential election, South Carolina has voted Republican in all elections except in 1976 when Jimmy Carter carried the state and its eight electoral votes.
