Brookdale Hartwell is considered to be the Cadillac of senior living facilities. It is certainly the most expensive, but they are consistently understaffed. I shudder to think how poorly my mother would have been cared for had I not been there to advocate for her. The meals were mediocre, sometimes a sack supper in weekends, consisting of a sandwich (cheap white bread, slice of ham, no mayonnaise or mustard), tiny bag of Cheetos, and a small, off brand Rice Krispie bar. No fruit. Holiday meals when family was invited were very good, but the other meals were plain. When you consider that taste is one of the last senses to go, it seems more effort should be made. My mother’s last week of life was filled with terrible memories of my having to help the two on staff clean her up at night and change her. I had to ask that her soiled sheets be re-washed as they were not clean, and when I retrieved her spare sheets that were folded in her closet I found them still soiled.
