Extraordinary care and the principles of family and faith are hallmarks by which our community has served our residents for more than 60 years. A welcoming community that feels like an extended family. The Culpeper is a place where neighbors genuinely care for one another. A sense of camaraderie and an upbeat atmosphere fill the hallways, dining room, assembly room and activity areas as residents enjoy a variety of offerings that cater to their individual wellness, social, intellectual and spiritual needs. A lifestyle that gives you freedom to do the things you love. Our maintenance-free apartments and cottages and extensive services and amenities enable you to enjoy an independent, active lifestyle doing the things you want to do, whether that means selecting from a full calendar of community activities or exploring the surrounding area with its prime opportunities for recreation and adventure. The Culpeper Story Our story began back in 1931 when James Thomas Edward, pastor of Culpeper Baptist Church, conceived a vision to create a distinctive home for senior adults in Virginia. During his service to the church and the greater community, Pastor Edward grew increasingly aware of the responsibility of LifeSpire of Virginia* to care for its aging parishioners. His dream was to offer a faith-based community that provided comprehensive care, while cultivating each individual’s spiritual and creative aspirations. Above all, he wanted to create a place that fostered dignity, faith and hope for retirees and their families. Pastor Edward’s dream was realized in 1945 when the Baptist General Association of Virginia voted to create a new ministry and open a residential community for seniors, called Virginia Baptist Homes. Three years later, thanks to the generosity of Virginia Baptists and a gift of a brick home (the Millman House), the first retirement community home was opened in Culpeper in 1948, thereby setting the standard for outstanding care, programs and services for seniors. The Millman House, albeit a temporary location, represented the keystone for LifeSpire of Virginia’s benevolent ministry. In 1951, the permanent Culpeper retirement community was opened under Pastor Edward’s tutelage. Since those doors first opened more than a half-century ago, residents of The Culpeper have enjoyed the peace of mind that comes from knowing they have a place to call home and access to quality care for the rest of their lives. *formerly Virginia Baptist Homes
