What is healthy aging?

At Seniorly, we believe it begins with your home, whether it’s your own house or apartment, or whether it’s a senior living community. We are committed to helping our aging citizens find a home to love. We have years of experience doing this for countless families. However, it all began when I was literally born into the third generation of the senior living profession.

My grandfather started communities in the San Francisco Bay Area. He passed it on to my father, who passed it on to me. While in graduate school at Berkeley-Haas, I started to think about how to innovate the senior living experience. What could be done to change the fear of “nursing homes” into a respect for and even excitement about the new generation of senior living communities? How can I play a role in reframing the idea of aging? That was the beginning of Seniorly.

This book is part of a commitment I have made to share what I have learned about healthy aging. Though there are many facets to aging, this book is focused primarily on loving where you live. Each chapter is intended to empower families with the wealth of information they will need to ensure they have the best experience whether seeking in-home care or a move to a senior living community. Here is a fact we know: Americans are living longer, which means the U.S. population of individuals over the age of 65 is exploding. In fact, it’s projected that the senior population will reach 98 million by 2060, and government data show that around 70% of aging adults will require long-term care at some point, whether at home or in a chosen community.
