More about The Redwoods, A Community Of Seniors

Bordering a marsh preserve north of San Francisco, the Redwoods is residential facility offering proximity to native flora and fauna as well as the excitement of the City. The campus consists of 15 one, two and three-story buildings with a choice of one bedroom and two-bedroom suites. The Center offers residential and independent living as well as skilled nursing and personalized care.
Hosting a community of friendly, intelligent, and liberal people, the Center has to make sure that its programming can meet the needs of such a unique, diverse group. Art in the gardens, collage and watercolor classes as well as the “meet the masters” classes fill residents’ needs for the fine arts, while drumming and singing classes, including the well-known “Rock the Ages” chorus, meet the need that everyone has for music in their lives.
To meet intellectual needs for mental challenge and learning, there is ongoing computer assistance on the community’s computers or on residents’ personal computers, either through formal classes or the drop-in lab. For interacting with young people, residents can sign up for computer tutoring with a high school tutor. In addition, the Center has a rich literary program; seniors gather together to discuss books, poetry, and film as well as to inspire and support each other in their own creative writings.
Due to the environmental location, outdoor activities are always in demand, and residents can spend a lot of time outside tending the community garden or taking part in gathering the vegetable and fruit yield through Thursday harvest.

About the Staff at The Redwoods, A Community Of Seniors

Every member of our skilled and incredibly dedicated staff is an integral part of our community, helping to make it welcoming, caring and inclusive for all our residents.

Staff and residents share special relationships, which we understand are different from those generally found at most other retirement communities and senior health care facilities. Staff members at The Redwoods are part of our community family. They take pride in assisting, serving and taking care of our residents in a professional manner, but they also take the time to get to know residents on a more personal level.

More than 40 percent of our staff has worked at The Redwoods for more than 10 years. That's an impressive statistic in our field and we believe the close bonds our staff develops with residents is the primary reason for this longevity.

Owner's Story

More than a place to call home, The Redwoods is a lively, spirited community known for our beautiful campus, rich cultural life and exciting comprehensive programs covering all aspects of physical, social, spiritual and emotional well being. Our diverse community of residents leads active physical and intellectual lives, supported by an extraordinary staff and embraced by a caring 400-plus core of volunteers. Our residents range in age from 65 to 105 for an average age 87. Established in 1972 by members of the Community Church of Mill Valley (CCMV), The Redwoods Retirement Community is a freestanding, not-for-profit senior residential community on 10 acres in Mill Valley, California. Today, we are a nationally recognized model for retirement living.

We have been commended for our programs, campus, and interaction between volunteers, staff and residents by the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA). This organization also selected The Redwoods as a model community and venue for its annual Leadership Training Program for two consecutive years. The Redwoods has received many community honors including Best of Marin from the Pacific Sun and The Epic Award from The Center for Volunteer Non Profit Leadership and Tamalpais Bank.

At the Redwoods and beyond, we work to transform attitudes and practices so that aging is recognized as a vibrant phase of renewal, discovery, service and choice.
