In the latest addition to the Seniorly CareTalks Series, Open House’s Michelle Alcedo and Manuel Martinez cover community resources for Bay Area LGBT seniors. Michelle Alcedo is the Director of Programs at Open House. Manuel Martinez is the Information & Resource Specialist.

Open House is a nonprofit organization located in San Francisco, California. Their mission is to serve the LGBT community by providing housing resources and assistance, supportive services and dynamic community engagement programs. As a result, they have developed a LGBT Aging Cultural Competency training program to help service providers understand the barriers and improve their services for LGBT seniors. Their goal is to increase access and support for LGBT seniors throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

“Open house exists to ensure that LGBT elders are supported and have the access to continue living independently and with community support,” Alcedo said.

According to Martinez, some of the most common resources for seniors include “housing information and referral, financial assistance, in home help, transportation, translation, mental health & counselling services, and many more!”
