The holidays are just around the corner, so it’s time to start planning that perfect gift for your grandparents.
It can sometimes be difficult to decide on a gift that conveys how wonderful and important grandparents are in your life and the lives of your children. Hopefully these ideas can inspire you for holiday shopping or DIY crafting this season.
1) A custom family tree
Many of us made a family tree as a school project when we were kids. But they can also be wonderful keepsakes for families through the generations.
LesleyGraceDesigns on Etsy makes beautiful custom designs that hold approximately 30 names. With this cool present, you can give the grands in your life artwork that holds special meaning.
2) A unique photo book
Photo sites such as Snapfish and Shutterfly allow you to easily upload photos of your grandparents, your own children or places your grandparents love. You can then combine photos, comments or quotes with beautiful borders to individualize a book for your grandparents. This way, even if they live far away, you and your children are always close at hand.
3) A magnetic moment
Take your favorite Instagram pictures – preferably ones with your grands and kids – and turn them into magnets with Sticky9. Your grands will love looking at your faces every time they open the fridge.
4) Record their stories
One of my favorite memories from childhood was listening to my grandparents tell stories from when they were young. Consider giving the grandparents in your life a blank book to fill with their stories; there are even books with recording devices built in so that grandparents can read and record favorite stories for their grandchildren.
Better yet, have the grandkids spend some time with their elders and talk about their proudest accomplishments. Write down a timeline of life events and combine them with family photos to create a family history book.
5) DIY crafts
If you have small children, it’s always a wonderful treat to have them craft gifts for grandparents. Gifts that they make on their own are often better than gifts you could purchase.
Take a piece of dark colored cloth and some light colored paint. Have your children apply handprints to the cloth, and then paint each child’s name under his or her handprint. Sew the cloth into a square or circle and stuff it to form a personalized throw pillow.
With a rectangle of wood, some paint and clothespins, you can make wonderful photo holders. Paint the wood and clothespins, and then hot glue them together. Attach any family photos you want!
Buy white or clear glass plates or coffee mugs and let kids draw on them with Sharpie markers. Bake them in the oven to set the designs. Grandparents will be so excited to have one-of-a-kind dinnerware. And they’ll think of you fondly every time they take a sip!
