What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living communities are designed especially for seniors who want to remain as independent as possible but who need a little regular help with the activities of daily living (ADLs) — activities such as bathing, grooming and dressing and the like. In an assisted living community, your loved one can enjoy greater opportunities for social interaction than they would living alone, and the community can help enhance their physical and mental health.

Services Available in Assisted Living Communities in San Jose

Assisted living communities bring seniors together in a residential living arrangement where meals and personal care are provided. Residents can count on three meals a day, usually served in a dining hall. Some larger communities may also offer cafes or snack bars, and sometimes residents have microwave-based kitchenettes in their homes or apartments.

Transportation is typically available to help seniors get to and from medical appointments, and sometimes to run errands or go shopping as well. San Jose assisted living communities often arrange for excursions and day trips to local museums, restaurants, shopping centers and theaters. Many assisted living communities also include plenty of amenities to keep residents busy and happy, including movie theaters, game rooms, beauty salons, libraries and swimming pools.

Social activities at assisted living communities run the gamut from exercise classes to current events discussion groups. Book clubs, cooking lessons, game groups and art classes are also common.

Getting Ready to Move to Assisted Living in San Jose

Before your loved one can move to an assisted living community in San Jose, they'll have to go through a couple of simple evaluations. Both of these evaluations are done to make sure the assisted living community can meet your loved one's needs and that it's a good fit.

Your loved one's personal physician performs the first evaluation, going over both physical and mental condition in detail. The physician writes a brief report that also covers all information regarding your loved one's dietary needs, a list of current medications, and details about any current conditions and treatments.

After that, the assisted living community's staff assesses your loved one to see how much help they need with the ADLs. Here, they're looking to see if they can provide all the required services. If they're unable to meet your loved one's needs for whatever reason, they should be able to recommend another community that can provide what your loved one requires.

Costs Associated With Assisted Living in San Jose

While the average cost of assisted living in San Jose runs about $4,000 per month, there's actually a wide range of communities available at different price points. You may be able to find a basic assisted living facility for around $2,000 a month, or if money is no object, you can check out communities that feel like resorts, which cost closer to $6,000.

Some people have the impression that assisted living can be costly when compared to renting an apartment. However, it's important to realize that the monthly fees for assisted living cover far more than just rent. These fees typically include all meals, all maintenance, regular housekeeping services, personal laundry and linen services, and personal caregivers to assist with the ADLs. Try pricing all those out individually, and add them to the monthly cost for accommodations to see a true comparison.

In addition, many assisted living communities include amenities — gyms, pools, landscaped outdoor areas and social activities — that might be pricey if you were paying for them separately. Once you add these costs in for comparison, you may find that assisted living makes a lot of economic sense.

So what can you expect at the various price points? If you opt for a basic assisted living community, you can save a lot of money while still receiving all the basic care needed and three meals a day, all at the hands of a well-trained staff. These no-frills options can be even more cost-effective if your loved one is willing to share a room, and they're an ideal choice for seniors who spend most of their time at home anyway and who might simply ignore the amenities that come at a higher cost.

The other end of the spectrum brings you those luxury communities that can easily be confused with a high-end hotel or resort. Here, your loved one is likely to live in a large, private apartment and have plenty of amenities available, including swimming pools and gyms. These communities typically offer lavish menus at every meal, with plenty of cuisine options and customized meal plans. They may also provide some medical care from visiting professionals such as physical therapists or podiatrists.

In between the basic and luxury assisted living communities are a wide array of boutique communities to choose from. These options typically offer private rooms or small private apartments and a moderate range of amenities, usually including exercise programs. Staff are available around the clock, and meal choices are high-quality and varied.

Assisted Living vs. Other Types of Senior Care

The spectrum of senior care stretches from independent living on one end to skilled nursing facilities on the other, with assisted living right in the middle of the continuum.

Independent living communities cater to seniors who don't need help with the ADLs. Often these communities are age-restricted, with no one under the age of 55 living there. Residents handle their own personal care, meals, transportation and medications while enjoying their retirement years in a community surrounded by like-minded people sharing activities and amenities together.

On the other end of the spectrum are skilled nursing facilities, also known as nursing homes. These facilities provide nursing care 24/7, catering primarily to residents who are mostly physically inactive. Many of the residents in skilled nursing facilities have significant medical conditions that require regular monitoring and treatment.

Assisted living sits in the middle of these types of senior care. In assisted living, residents are encouraged to maintain as much independence as possible. They typically receive help with the ADLs, meals and transportation.
